Today is Motivation Monday at Porsche Southpoint and we are celebrating Memorial Day. Memorial Day is always the last Monday of May, where we honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military. We are thankful for the sacrifices our service members give, and have given, to protect our freedom.

Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War, but didn’t become a federal holiday until 1971.[1] Waterloo, New York is credited for having started the holiday on May 5, 1866.[2] The town of Waterloo hosted this event annually, even before it was called to become a nation-wide holiday. General John A. Logan called for this holiday on May 5, 1868, as a way to remember those lost in war.[3]

Decoration Day gradually became Memorial Day, which is what the holiday was more commonly called by the time it became a federal holiday.[4] The United States has, for a long time, thought it important to remember those who have fought and died for our country. At Porsche Southpoint, we appreciate what our service members have given to protect our freedom and allow us to do what we do.

Thank you to all those who have served our country!
