Chapel Hill, Durham, Cary, Apex, Raleigh, the rest of the Triangle area, and pretty much all of North Carolina has a huge mixture of different cultures. People from all across the United States, and the world, gather in the area to live, work, and go to school. However, it seems that everyone that moves here tend to laugh at the area when it comes to that four-letter S-word, snow.
In North Carolina, and the rest of the south, we don’t always get that white fluffy stuff that falls from the sky very often. So we’re not as prepared to deal with it as other parts of the U.S. That’s one of the reasons everything tends to “shut down.” Another thing that tends to happen is all the milk and bread disappear from the shelves. Recently during a conversation, a client made the comment, “You crazy southern people and snow. When are you getting your milk and bread?”
There has always been a curiosity of where this idea came from. What are you going to do with milk and bread? Make homemade Cinnamon Toast Crunch? After a little bit of research, I found the answer to be slightly shocking. This “crazy southern people” milk and bread grab actually originated in New England. In 1978 a massive blizzard struck New England, and people were stranded in their homes for weeks. Running out of things like milk and bread (toilet paper is included in some areas) created the hysteria of buying them up before a major storm.
So people from the south can gladly take the blame for shutting things down when it comes to snow. We’re just not prepared because it doesn’t happen very often. However, New England gets all the credit for there being a milk and bread shortage when the meteorologist mentions the S-word.
