Have you ever heard of the Porsche Sport Driving School (PSDS)? If you haven’t, you NEED to take a look at their website. PSDS is a place to learn how to drive a Porsche around a racetrack, that they so cleverly describe as “A great time. Brilliantly disguised as ‘team building’”[1]. The School offers several different courses, geared to each individuals’ needs, and focuses on the experience of truly driving a car at peak performance. It is mentioned that the school encourages you to “go to your limits”, which can easily be interpreted as allowing you to the limit where you feel comfortable. Rest assured they are, likely, just as concerned about your safety as they are about their own and the cars’.
The PSDS is located in Birmingham, Alabama…surprised? Who would’ve thought that a Porsche driving school would’ve landed in Alabama? Well, here’s why it’s in Alabama: 2.38 miles of track, 16 turns, and over 80 feet of elevation change[2]. This is the ultimate test for professional drivers, so it’s sure to make for an amazing race track to learn how to drive on. The facility also includes an area called the “Proving Grounds” to teach advanced performance driving techniques, lane changes, turbo launch, and advanced handling techniques[3]. The PSDS is held at the Barber Motorsports Park, which is home to the Barber Motorsports Museum. The Barber Motorsports Museum is a Guiness World Record holder and hosts one of the largest collections of race cars and bikes in the country[4].
The Porsche Sport Driving School has many instructors (too many to list in this blog, but you can check them out here) that are current race car, or other professional, drivers[5]. They do offer half-day and full-day corporate experiences as well. If you are reading this and you own your own company, nothing says “I appreciate you” more than a day racing Porsches! If you are interested in corporate events, visit their site for more information.
There are many different courses available for all different driving skills. For beginners, PSDS offers the Precision – One-Day High Performance Driving Course, or, the Performance – Two-Day High Performance Driving Course. After you have completed one of these two courses, you’re eligible to register for the Masters – Two-Day High Performance Driving Course. After the Masters Course has been completed, there are 3 options to choose from: the Masters R – One-Day Advanced Car Control and Lapping Day, the Masters RS – Three-Day Competition Driving Course, or the Masters RSR – Four-Day Competition Driving Course[6]. Pick your poison. Visit their website for more information on pricing.
Taking a few days and learning how to drive a high performance car is not just tons of fun, but a way to help your daily driving improve. Think about this: if you hydroplane on the road today, could you correct the error? There’s a chance that you could, but no guarantee. After taking an advanced driving course on the wet pad, correcting a hydroplane will be second nature! You will need to practice, learn, and put in the effort to do it correctly, though. If you’ve never considered taking an advanced driving course in a high performance vehicle, give it a second thought and check out the Porsche Sport Driving School in Birmingham, Alabama.
