Being from the deep south, biscuits and chocolate gravy was a breakfast treat that we only got maybe once or twice a year, one of those special days included Christmas!
I can remember the smell of my grandma Sue’s cooking coming into the living room, where my two younger sisters and I made a fort patiently waiting for Santa Claus, but eventually falling asleep.
The three of us would wake up to the voice of my grandma, “Come on, Sugar, breakfast is ready.”
We would all run into the kitchen to have the absolute best Christmas breakfast ever, chocolate gravy and biscuits!
The best thing about this recipe is that you cannot mess it up, you can literally make it many different ways depending on your preference, but this recipe is my favorite.
4 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tbsp. flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups whole milk
4 tbsp. butter
1 tsp vanilla
In a medium sauce pan, whisk together the dry ingredients. Pour in the milk and whisk vigorously to combine. Heat over medium-high until the mixture bubbles. Turn heat down to medium and stir until mixture has thickened to a gravy consistency. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.
Let cool slightly, then transfer to a gravy boat. Serve warm over buttermilk biscuits.
