Porsche purists should stop reading now. Ok, let's get on to the news: all Porsche 911s are now turbocharged! That's right, no more water-cooled engines, never mind air-cooled. Times change, technology marches on. But the good news, according to auto critic Tom Voelk of The New York Times, is that the all-new 2017 edition of the Porsche 911 is better than ever. Click "play" in the video clip below to watch the full report.
The twin-turbo version of the flat-six engine is smaller now at 3.0 liters and more fuel-efficient. It also packs additional horsepower — 420 in the Carrera S Cabriolet model Voelk tested, which has an EPA fuel efficiency rating of 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, according to the government. And then there’s the torque — 368 pound-feet of it delivered in a wonderfully linear manner from 1,700 through 5,000 r.p.m.
Voelk also calls this new motor more drivable, especially when teamed to the seven-speed manual transmission. The seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox is a brilliant piece of machinery. Both transmissions are redesigned.
