If you fancy yourself a Porsche enthusiast, chances are you've already seen how impressive the forthcoming Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid is on paper. For those of you who haven't, allow Performance Porsche to explain.

While you might not ordinarily pair the words impressive and hybrid in the same sentence, the Porsche 918 Spyder exceeds all expectations by pairing a 580-horsepower, 4.6-liter V8 engine with two 109-horsepower electric motors. The end result is a combined output the falls just short of 800 horsepower.

Those kind of numbers simply scream to be unleashed on the race track, and that's exactly what Porsche did recently to prove that the 918 Spyder is more than just a concept. What's more, they did so at the single most demanding race track known to man: the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

And how did it fare?

Every bit as well as you think a new Porsche would, and then some. Specifically, it managed to complete one of the fastest laps ever recorded by a street-legal vehicle with standard tires: 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

Impressive would be an understatement. It would simply be more fitting to say those are the kind of numbers that make us wish Porsche would hurry up with a production model already. Of course, we're also reminded that the 918 Spyder is currently only set for a limited production run. But perhaps this latest achievement will spark a larger level of demand from the general public. Enough, perhaps, to force Porsche to consider a wider release.

Whether or not that happens, we have yet to see. That said, you're invited to stay tuned to the Performance Porsche blog for more information on the Porsche 918 Spyder.
