Porsche fans are loyal to the Porsche brand, but when it comes to developing new technologies, Porsche is open to working with other automakers. In this case, we're talking about electric charging stations.

Like the other automakers, Porsche knows there needs to be a standard for electric vehicle charging stations in order to make electric vehicles themselves, more viable. To help all drivers of electric vehicles, Porsche is teaming up with Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, GM and Volkswagen to create the best charging system for the U.S. and Europe.

The system they plan to develop will be compatible with most of the charging mechanisms on EV cars today. This will ensure that their product receives wide adoption. The compatible charging station may also help consumers fear that there will be no consistent infrastructure in place to support their EV purchase.

How far along in the development phase are Porsche and their new-found partners? The agreement was just made formal; so, not very. The seven automakers have, however, decided to use HomePlug Green Phy as the communications protocol. And, we expect them to move rather quickly given the fast-growing interest in EV technology.
