Just a few months ago, Porsche announced that they were going to introduce a new model every year until 2018. Rumors are circulating now that the Porsche 961 may be one of those new models in 2013. For auto enthusiasts, you may recognize this number from the 80's- for a short amount of time, Porsche had built the 961 and raced it three times until technical problems got in the way. This new 961 is supposed to be above the 911, with a proposed rear-drive V8 unit, producing up to 441kW of power. This modern 961 will be modeled after the 918 Spyder but will be in coupe form. An electric motor will also be available to boost output up to 600 horsepower, the most powerful Porsche ever manufactured. Rumors also have it that the new car will have an internal codename of 9x1. Not only will the car be available in a new engine but it will also be available as a hybrid car that uses an electric motor to provide back up power to the car (the 600hp we mentioned). The predicted price is around 200,000 Euros, which at the current USD rate is about $300,000. Porsche CEO, Matthias Mueller, previously commented on such a model taking a position between the GT2 and the 918, saying, "Between the two there is still a gap where Italian competitors are currently very active. We are investigating that as an in-house project. We will make a decision by the middle of the year." We'll keep you updated on any details that come about, stay tuned!
