The Porsche Team Manthey set a new distance record on Monday at the Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race with the 911 GT3 RSR. Although the 911 started in 18th place, three hours and 25 minutes in to the race, it found itself in the lead. Once the Porsche got the lead, there was no turning back. For the remaining 16 hours and 35 minutes, the driver team of Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Lucas Luhr held the lead, securing Porsche's fifth Nurburgring victory in the last six years.
The distance record set by the 911 GT3 RSR was 156 laps and 2,459.989 miles.
"Wimming this year is one of the most emotional moments of my career," said Lieb. "We really didn't expect to conquer here...It's simply fantastic."
The 911 GT3 RSR's main competition was with the Heico Motorsport Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, which started in 32nd place; the Audi Sport Team Phoenix Audi R8 LMS, which started in 15th place; and the BMW Motosport M3 GT, which started in second place. In the end, the BMW was able to secure second place, the Audi in third and the Mercedes-Benz in fourth.
